Diastasis Recti

Diastasis Recti

Diastasis Recti by definition is simply the separation of the two longitudinal rectus abdominis muscles where they attach, the linea alba. Most people notice a small bulge, protruding abdomen, or ‘belly button pop’ at the end of a pregnancy. Literature and research over the years have continued to change in what is best for treatment and return to function. What we thought was needing to cease all abdominal and core work is now almost completely the opposite.

For research purposes diastasis recti is highlighted by the width and depth of separation of the linea alba. Your physical therapist will measure more than likely with their fingers, noting a ‘finger width gap and/or depth’. This is not the whole picture, or at least not anymore.

Frankly Pelvic’s services now include help with Diastasis Recti for women and men

Understanding your function and current dysfunction is where treatment options and specific rehabilitation plan come into place. A lot of people with a large ‘gap’ can have little to no pain or dysfunction, whereas someone with poor abdominal and trunk control, poor pressure management and a very small ‘gap’ can be in terrible pain and have significant dysfunction.

Diastasis recti can occur as a result of a growing belly (weight gain, pregnancy), constipation, poor breathing and pressure management (think straining), incorrect form during lifting tasks, in addition to doing the same core routine incorrectly over and over again. Poor abdominal, trunk control and poor pressure management is not just a ‘female’ problem, and commonly affects men. If you or someone you know has issues with hernias or has had repeated hernia surgeries ask your doctor or come in for an evaluation now to improve your core control and body mechanics to stop this hernia/diastasis cycle.
