Pelvic Organ Prolapse, or POP for short, can be one of the scarier things you Google in the middle of the night. Fear not, it’s not the end of the world.
Let’s start by defining it. Pelvic Organ Prolapse is when one or more of your pelvic organs (bladder, uterus, rectum, vagina, bowels/small intestine) prolapse or protrude through the muscular vaginal wall. This typically feels like pressure, discomfort, or heaviness in your pelvic or underwear region. Sometimes it can be accompanied with stinging, burning, or nerve-like pain, but not often. You might also experience incomplete bladder or bowel emptying, needing to wipe extra after a bowel movement, or having to actually push something back in after sitting on the toilet. Vaginal intercourse or sex is (usually) not affected and in fact could make your symptoms feel better temporarily. Most patients note a heaviness or their pressure worsens as the day goes on.
At Frankly Pelvic, we work with your team of providers, including your Gynecologists, Urogynecologists, Hormone Specialists, and others to ensure that you are receiving the full range of care you deserve. Treating and managing prolapse is a multidisciplinary approach, and those that believe they are the one-stop shop are missing the full picture.
All our sessions are rooted in anatomy and physiology, with the mission that understanding and advocating for your own anatomy will better help you modify or improve your own anatomy. After completing a full body assessment including balance, mobility, strength of back, core, and hips we’ll move to a laying down pelvic assessment and finish with a standing assessment of the pelvic floor. In between, we’ll discuss weight training benefits and strategies, ensuring that your tissue health is top-notch, and make a plan to progress with intra abdominal pressure management, body mechanics, pelvic floor function, as well as fine tuning bladder and bowel habits.
Communicating with your medical providers regarding use of hormonal topical creams, fittings for pessaries (vaginal inserts that can help prop up and support your organs as we work to strengthen the surrounding tissues), and changing the narrative of decades old wives-tales regarding pelvic health, will help you continue to enjoy and participate in all activities that bring you joy without prolapse worry.
