Whether you pushed your baby out or had them lifted out through your abdomen, your body went through something significant. And yet — so many people are sent home after birth with little to no guidance on what to do about the scar tissue left behind. Perineal tears, episiotomies, and cesarean incisions all heal on the outside, but what’s happening underneath the surface is a whole different story.
Scar tissue isn’t just a cosmetic concern. It can restrict movement, create tension that pulls on surrounding structures, contribute to pain with sitting, sex, or exercise, and even affect how your core and pelvic floor function. The good news? Scars are incredibly responsive to treatment — even years after the original injury or surgery.

Tearing during vaginal birth is extremely common — up to 90% of first-time vaginal births result in some degree of perineal trauma. Whether you had a small first-degree tear or a more significant repair, the scar tissue that forms can become tight, sensitive, or restrict the surrounding tissue. This can show up as pain or pulling with intercourse, difficulty using tampons, discomfort with sitting, or a general sense that things just don’t feel the same as they did before. That’s not just “how it is now.” That’s something we can work on.
A C-section is major abdominal surgery — seven layers of tissue are cut and then sutured back together. The scar you can see on your skin is just the beginning. Underneath, adhesions can form between layers of tissue, contributing to a sensation of numbness, tightness, or that “shelf” appearance above the scar. These adhesions can also pull on the bladder, affect hip mobility, contribute to lower back pain, and even impact pelvic floor function. If you’ve had a C-section and feel like something is just off — even years later — your scar may be a piece of the puzzle.

At Frankly Pelvic, scar assessment is a routine part of postpartum care. We use hands-on manual therapy techniques to help mobilize scar tissue, improve tissue mobility, reduce sensitivity, and restore normal function to the surrounding structures. We’ll also teach you how to work on your scar at home so healing continues between sessions. You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable to seek help — and you don’t have to just live with a scar that’s limiting you.
