Pelvic health physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on treating dysfunction in and around the pelvic floor—a hammock-like group of muscles that support your bladder, bowel, reproductive organs, and core stability. Dr. Kelly Frank at Frankly Pelvic specializes in retraining these muscles to function properly in addition to assessing you in a whole person approach – looking at postures, gait pattern, holding patterns in the rest of your body to optimize not only your pelvic health but your overall health. Through manual therapy, targeted exercises, education, and behavioral modifications, pelvic health physical therapy helps restore control and eliminate pain.
Dr. Kelly Frank treats anyone with a pelvis experiencing urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, constipation and straining, pelvic pain, pain during intercourse/orgasm, sexual dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse, postpartum recovery, prenatal pelvic health, diastasis recti, endometriosis-related pain, prostate and penile dysfunction related issues, bladder urgency, frequency and more.
No. While postpartum women commonly seek out Pelvic PT, pelvic health dysfunction affects all genders and ages at various points in our lifetimes. We welcome LGBTQIA+ patients—everyone has a pelvis and deserves to live without pelvic pain or pelvic dysfunction. It is never too early or too late to seek help and care.
It Depends. Pelvic health physical therapy is a “covered service“ under most insurance plans like any other physical therapy. Covered does not mean “free”. Most patients we see are insured under a high deductible plan through private insurers. Frankly Pelvic is not ‘in network’ with any private insurance and would be considered an out of network provider. We chose to be out of network intentionally so we can provide 90-minute evaluations, 60 minute follow up visits, offer home visits, wellness visits, in addition to a personalized approach where you will always see your primary therapist, Dr. Kelly Frank so you can get better faster, likely with fewer sessions. Insurance Coverage or reimbursement varies by plan. We encourage you to reach out to your insurer and ask what your remaining deductible is, what could be reimbursed if you submit a SuperBill, or if Frankly Pelvic would be considered ‘in network’ based on local availability (oftentimes if no in-network therapist is available to see you in a timely manner, OON (out of network) providers can become in-network providers under some plans). With Frankly Pelvic there is no additional fee or charge after your session, what you pay at each session is the total cost for that visit. No matter which type of care program or provider you choose, we highly encourage you to call your insurers & your potential providers to make sure they are the best fit for you at this time in your life and this time in your healing journey.
No, you don’t need a referral to schedule an appointment. Florida is a “direct access” to physical therapy state, as PTs practice with doctorate level of education. However, your specific insurance company may require a referral for reimbursement purposes.
Yourself! If you’ve completed our intake forms online, no additional paperwork is needed.
Your first appointment is an hour and a half or about 90 minutes. This allows Dr. Kelly sufficient time to take your history, answer questions, perform a thorough assessment, and discuss your treatment plan. Follow up appointments are typically an hour.
Dr. Kelly will conduct a thorough evaluation with in-depth conversation about your symptoms, medical history, bowel and bladder habits, issues related to your current dysfunction or reason for therapy, lifestyle, and goals. She’ll then perform a physical exam assessing posture, breathing, strength, flexibility, and how your spine, hips, and pelvis move. Assessing gait, transfers, running or lifting, any scar tissue as needed. If comfortable, an internal vaginal and/or rectal exam can be performed to gain more insight to your issues. Dr. Kelly will gain consent for every aspect of the exam(s) and if you are ever uncomfortable, we will discontinue that portion of the exam.
Your comfort is paramount and your consent is priority . An internal exam is never required—you can decline or pause it anytime. Dr. Kelly can perform an external assessment or whatever level of assessment you are comfortable with and still develop an effective treatment plan. For patients under 18 or have not participated in a gynecologic or urologic exam, a parent or guardian will be asked to accompany the patient and likely an internal exam or an exam under the under garments is not indicated and will not be performed. Patients are always welcomed and encouraged to bring a spouse, partner, chaperone, or friend to help advocate for them, learn therapy techniques (as appropriate), and support the patient at any and all visits. Chaperones are not provided at Frankly Pelvic. If you have a specific request or need please contact your therapist to discuss and make specific arrangements on a case by case basis.
Your personalized plan will likely include: lots of education, manual therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises, myofascial release, biofeedback, postural and movement corrections, bowel and bladder retraining, breathing techniques, and lifestyle modifications, and more. Plus ways to improve discussion and advocacy for your issues with your co-providers and/or physicians.
Yes. Dr. Kelly offers virtual sessions via secure video conferencing. This is ideal for consultations, follow-ups, exercise instruction, and education. If your case requires hands-on manual therapy Dr. Kelly can recommend a clinic closest to you to receive care. If no in-person care is nearby, virtual care is still recommended and advised over trial and error on your own at home.
Dr. Kelly provides services from her Altamonte Springs & Winter Park offices, in-home sessions throughout Central Florida and virtual sessions available anywhere. A separate travel fee applies to in-home sessions outside a 20-mile GPS route from Altamonte Springs.
Every patient and their treatment plan are unique. Most patients benefit from six to eight sessions, where some do better with two to four. Dr. Kelly develops a plan with realistic expectations and adjusts based on your progress, as well as your compliance and ability to do your home exercises and/or lifestyle modifications. Dr. Kelly realizes your time, money, and effort are valuable and wants to provide the most education, knowledge, and engagement at each session so it carries forward regardless of total sessions someone is able to have due to work, finances, childcare, and personal life versus the traditional insurance model where if you are ‘allotted 12 visits you use them even if they are not medically necessary’. At Frankly Pelvic we want to create lasting change for the better, so creating a plan and program that works for YOU is essential to your success.
Every patient is different, however most clients benefit from a few weekly visits, then adjussting to bi-weekly then possibly monthly visits as symptoms improve.
Home exercises between sessions are crucial to success. Dr. Kelly teaches exercises and strategies tailored to your condition—stretches, strengthening, relaxation techniques, and breathing exercises – as is appropriate for your case. She provides clear instructions and welcomes questions between sessions via email, call, or text to help clarify, progress, or change.
No. You may feel light pressure during assessment, but you shouldn’t feel pain.During the initial evaluation Dr. Kelly will attempt to provoke your symptoms so we can find the source of your pain, but during treatments, exercises, or therapies you should not encounter increased pain. If you experience pain, tell Dr. Kelly immediately so she can adjust your plan while still effectively addressing your symptoms. We are not prescribing to the ‘no pain no gain’ model.
Absolutely. Dr. Kelly specializes in postpartum recovery. Half of new mothers experience pelvic pain after delivery; one in three report bowel and bladder issues. She can assess your healing, check for scar tissue, and guide you back to fitness safely.Getting assessed as soon as symptoms arrive (or even better during pregnacy to PREVENT any issues is best) but anytime that works best for you is the best time to start healing. Whether that is 2 weeks postpartum, 6 weeks, 1 year or 20 years.
Yes! Perinatal (or during pregnancy) pelvic health PT is valuable. Dr. Kelly can help you decrease tearing risk, go over birth prep basics like breathing and positioning for labor, optimize strength and flexibility, and prepare your pelvic floor, core and body for childbirth. Treatment is safe during all pregnancy stages.
Yes. Pain during intercourse or dyspareunia can result from pelvic floor tension, trauma, or whole body systemic disease like endometriosis, among other reasons. Dr. Kelly uses a trauma informed approach, and when appropriate will provide resources and referrals to mental health counselors, therapists, and sex therapists as physical healing is usually best when a whole person care team is working toward the same goal for the patient. Physical therapy intervention such as manual therapy, down-training techniques, education, and specific exercises can help patients return to pain-free intercourse.
No. Stress urinary incontinence is common but not normal. Many patients experience leaking post surgery (hysterectomy, prostatecomy, cesarean) or during pregnancy or postpartum, or as they age in general. Most assume this is normal post ‘xyz’ or ‘just part of the healing process’ when in fact it can be improved quickly with specific intervention. Dr. Kelly assesses your pelvic floor strength, core coordination, postures and whole body movement patterns to help you regain control of your bladder
Persistent or recurring pelvic pain can be from something inside the pelvis like our muscles, ligaments, nerves, or bones. Pain can also refer from our spine or other areas near the pelvis like our groin or a hernia that might present as pelvic pain. No matter the source of the pain, Dr. Kelly with Frankly Pelvic will perform a fully body assessment to seek the source of the pain, improve movement patterns, strengthen or retrain muscle groups, and more to work on decreasing and eliminating your pelvic pain.
“Kelly was such a blessing throughout my pregnancy and postpartum care. She makes you feel so comfortable and gives you sustainable goals for each session. I left her care feeling empowered and would recommend her to anyone!”
