When is the best time to start (Pelvic) Physical Therapy?
So many clients ask me “when should I start Pelvic PT or want to know when to start pelvic floor therapy after birth.”
NOW! Or soon!
Well, the fact that you’re asking about a super personal issue, be it, urinary leaking, constipation, pelvic pain, or abdominal weakness – to name a few; OR worried that something your body is doing or not doing is possibly not normal or not okay… that probably means now is the best time!
Midwives, OBGYNs, primary care providers, and other medical professionals sometimes hesitate to refer to Pelvic Physical Therapy in hopes that whatever the issue is, it will resolve on its own. In some cases that can definitely be true! But in most cases, why wait? Why live with back pain DURING pregnancy, when you can learn strategies, obtain helpful supports, perform exercises, or receive manual therapies that will help in the NOW (and so it doesn’t worsen)!
I love treating patients as a proactive approach versus a reactive approach (I love my reactive approach patients too!).
If you’re newly pregnant, that is the perfect time to reach out and see a Pelvic Floor PT (or OT, occupational therapist).
If you know you have a surgery coming up (laparoscopy, abdominal surgery, prostatectomy, hysterectomy) – Get in before surgery to best prepare yourself for post-surgical healing and obtain the best outcomes!
If you’re 15-20 years postpartum and you’ve decided this is now the year for you – awesome – Let’s Go!
So when to start pelvic floor therapy after birth ? The best time is the time you have. I can promise you that starting this pelvic floor journey you’ll learn pelvic floor physical therapy techniques , learn more about yourself, learn to be your best self and your best advocate so that you can take on whatever chapter of life comes your way next strong, empowered, and confident in what your body can do!
If you’re dealing with chronic issues like GI irritability, constipation, urinary leakage, pelvic pain since the start of your first period – reach out and get your appointment scheduled or your consultation!
